#MauiStrong
On August 8th, 2023, three cities on Maui Island – Kula, Kihei, and Lahaina – were struck by devastating wildfires. The most severe impact was felt in Historic Lahaina, where numerous structures were either damaged or completely destroyed. This led to the loss of homes, businesses, and entire communities overnight, resulting in significant devastation across Lahaina. Many homes on Maui house multiple generations, a common response to the housing crisis.
Tragically, the disaster displaced thousands of residents, including the organization’s partner families. The Lahaina wildfires decimated all ten homes previously constructed by the collective efforts of the team, partner families, volunteers, and the community in Kahoma Residential Subdivision. The heart-wrenching destruction caused by these fires has prompted Habitat for Humanity Maui to stand in unity with the affected community and to demonstrate a steadfast commitment to aiding those impacted by the disaster. The organization is determined to collaboratively rebuild homes, communities, and the spirit of hope.
