A Very Peri Makeover: DIY Mirrored Tray

By Sarah Ramberg

Hey, there, it’s Sarah of Sadie Seasongoods again, with a new upcycling idea to share with you.

Every year, the company, Pantone, comes out with a “Color of the Year”. And for 2022, that color was “Very Peri”, which is a bright periwinkle blue/violet. So, I decided to harness that bright, gorgeous color into an upcycling makeover. But not just any makeover- a DIY mirrored tray that started as a picture frame from one of our Charlotte Region ReStores! You might be surprised at how easy and straightforward this upcycling project is.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Picture frame from Habitat ReStore
  • Periwinkle Paint
  • Looking Glass spray paint
  • Felt or Adhesive Felt
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue or other quick-drying craft glue

Safety First!

If you do any spray painting, make sure you have a well-ventilated area to work in. If you are working with a hot glue gun, make sure to keep your fingers away from the tip and don’t touch any recently-dispensed glue that is still soft.

Here’s how this Very Peri Tray was Created:

  • Head to one of our Charlotte Region ReStores and find a picture frame to upcycle. For a mirrored tray, you’ll want one that is an appropriate size for your dresser and it must also have a glass pane.
  • Disassemble your picture frame, but keep all of the parts. You’ll be painting the frame itself and the glass, but the backing will still come in handy. Go ahead and wipe down or clean the wooden frame and glass, as well.
  • Now for the Very Peri paint! I opted to use “Wild Pansy” by Behr for my version of Very Peri. From there, I laid out a drop cloth and began to brush the paint onto the wooden frame.
  • While the frame dried, I set up an area outside to spray paint the glass using Looking Glass spray paint. This will transform the clear glass into a reflective surface (not quite a bright shiny mirror, but perfect for a jewelry tray). Following the can’s directions, I gave the glass several light coats until the side facing up was opaque.
  • Once all the paint had dried, reassemble the picture frame parts. Make sure to flip the glass right-side-up so that the reflective side shows through the frame!
  • To finish off your DIY mirrored tray, cut out a large piece of felt to glue on the underside. This will protect your dresser top from getting scratched or nicked by the back of the frame. Now your tray is ready for your favorite jewelry to be displayed!

Have a Very Peri Day!
